Speaking Life Into Motherhood EP 74

Reading Doesn't Have to Be a Battle, Mama

Hi friend,

If reading time at your house has ever ended in tears (yours or theirs), this episode is for you.

I sat down with Melanie Jeffrey — former K-3 classroom teacher and host of Phonics for Homeschool Moms — to talk about what's actually developmentally appropriate when it comes to reading, why phonics beats the sight-word approach so many of us grew up with, and simple, playful ways to build reading skills without a workbook fight. We also dig into what to do if your child seems "behind," and how to know if it's time to look closer at something like dyslexia.

EP 74: Is My Child Behind in Reading? Why Phonics Fixes What Sight Words Broke

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6

A prayer for you:

Lord, thank You that You have already equipped me to be my child's first and best teacher. When I feel behind, overwhelmed, or unsure if I'm doing this right, remind me that You go before us and that there is no "wrong pace" in Your timing. Give me patience for the hard lessons and joy in the small wins. Help me trust that You have called our family to this path for a reason. In Jesus' name, amen.

Speaking Life Into Motherhood EP 72 "I've Had It Too": Why Needing a Break Doesn't Make You a Bad Mom Hi friend, If you've scrolled social media in the last week, you've probably seen the clip — a podcast host saying she'd have strapped her kids to her back just to get them somewhere she wasn't, and that she doesn't trust anyone who wants to be with their own kids all day. Homeschool families have had a lot to say about it. But this week, I wanted to talk to a different mama in that...

Speaking Life Into Motherhood EP 26 & 27 Patriots, homeschool, and hope for moms of kids with additional needs Hi friend, It's been a minute since I've landed in your inbox, and I want to be honest about why. Between summer schedules, homeschool planning, and an injury that's forced me to slow down more than I'd like to admit, life has looked different lately. But here's what I keep coming back to — even in the slowing down, even in the discomfort, God has given me so much to be grateful for....

Speaking Life Into Motherhood Whether you want to homeschool or just want to survive summer — this one is for you Hi friend! We are already in the craziness of May! It's been a hot second since I got an email out, but I have been getting out podcast episodes and I wanted to keep you in the loop. I recently started a "home education" series. It was not just born out of a love for homeschooling. It was born out of a deep belief that you, as a mom, are the most powerful educator your child will...
