Speaking Life Into Motherhood EP 26 & 27

Patriots, homeschool, and hope for moms of kids with additional needs

Hi friend,

It's been a minute since I've landed in your inbox, and I want to be honest about why. Between summer schedules, homeschool planning, and an injury that's forced me to slow down more than I'd like to admit, life has looked different lately. But here's what I keep coming back to — even in the slowing down, even in the discomfort, God has given me so much to be grateful for. Sometimes He interrupts our pace on purpose, and I'm trying to let Him teach me instead of just push through it.

All that to say — I'm back, and I've got two episodes I can't wait for you to hear.

On the podcast this past week, I sat down to talk about "Heroes of 1776" with Janie Nitze, co-author with Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch of a beautiful new children's book celebrating America's 250th birthday. We talked about the ordinary people who did extraordinary things to shape the Declaration of Independence, and how we as parents can bring these stories to life for our own kids — whether you're homeschooling or just looking for ways to build character and courage at home. With everything going on in our country right now, I think you'll find this conversation timely and encouraging.

I also want to point you to a recent episode I was a guest on — School to Homeschool with Janae Daniels. Janae asked me to share my own story: what led us to homeschool, and specifically what it's looked like to homeschool a child who had an IEP in the school system. If you've ever wondered whether you're "qualified" to homeschool a child with additional needs, or you're in the thick of transitioning from an IEP to home education, I get vulnerable about our journey and I think it'll speak right to where you are.

Homeschooling with an IEP: What Parents Need to Know with Elyse Scheeler

A little devotional for today...

We recently watched the movie "David" as a family, and there's a scene where David cries out, "Why God, why have You forsaken me?" My kids had questions. Why would God let David — a man after His own heart — feel so abandoned?

But that cry echoes something deeper. David penned those very words in Psalm 22, centuries before Jesus spoke them from the cross. Even in that raw, honest moment of feeling forsaken, David's story reminds us that God was writing something David couldn't yet see — a plan that stretched far beyond his own pain and understanding, all the way to the cross itself.

With some of the unexpected challenges we've encountered recently, I reminded my kids (and myself!) that we won't always see the plans God has for us in the middle of the hard. Sometimes He allows hard things to happen so we are reminded to lean on Him precisely when we can't see the path forward — not because He's absent, but because that's exactly where trust is built.

I've also been sitting in Psalm 46:10 lately: "Be still, and know that I am God."

"Be still, and know that I am God."
~ Psalm 46:10

It's easy to read that verse as a gentle suggestion. But lately I've felt it more like a command — one I needed. Being still isn't giving up, and it isn't failure. It's trust. It's remembering that God is still God even when my body needs rest, my schedule gets disrupted, and my to-do list doesn't get done the way I planned.

If you're in a season of slowing down — whether it's an injury, a hard summer, or just the exhaustion of mothering a child with additional needs — I want you to know you're not behind. You're not failing. Like David, you're being invited to be still and trust the One who sees the whole picture, even when you can't.

A prayer for you:

Lord, thank You for the seasons that slow us down and teach us to depend on You more. Thank You for David's honesty in the Psalms, and for the reminder that even feeling forsaken doesn't mean we ARE forsaken. For every mama reading this who is tired, healing, or simply trying to keep up — meet her in the stillness. Give her peace instead of guilt, and confidence instead of comparison. Remind her that You are writing her story and her child's story, even in the waiting. In Jesus' name, amen.

Speaking Life Into Motherhood EP 74 Reading Doesn't Have to Be a Battle, Mama Hi friend, If reading time at your house has ever ended in tears (yours or theirs), this episode is for you. I sat down with Melanie Jeffrey — former K-3 classroom teacher and host of Phonics for Homeschool Moms — to talk about what's actually developmentally appropriate when it comes to reading, why phonics beats the sight-word approach so many of us grew up with, and simple, playful ways to build reading skills...

Speaking Life Into Motherhood EP 72 "I've Had It Too": Why Needing a Break Doesn't Make You a Bad Mom Hi friend, If you've scrolled social media in the last week, you've probably seen the clip — a podcast host saying she'd have strapped her kids to her back just to get them somewhere she wasn't, and that she doesn't trust anyone who wants to be with their own kids all day. Homeschool families have had a lot to say about it. But this week, I wanted to talk to a different mama in that...

Speaking Life Into Motherhood Whether you want to homeschool or just want to survive summer — this one is for you Hi friend! We are already in the craziness of May! It's been a hot second since I got an email out, but I have been getting out podcast episodes and I wanted to keep you in the loop. I recently started a "home education" series. It was not just born out of a love for homeschooling. It was born out of a deep belief that you, as a mom, are the most powerful educator your child will...
