Christian Mom's Guide:

Using the PACE Method to Find Calm Amidst Chaos and Dysregulation

Hi friend,

Do you ever feel like you're on "the sharp end" of parenting? Or exhausted from trying all the things "they" said should work, but don't for your child and your family's needs?

I'm excited to share our latest podcast episode featuring Catherine Cowell, a spiritual director, life coach, and mother of two adoptive boys with additional needs. Catherine brings a wealth of wisdom on integrating faith with the unique challenges of parenting children who require different approaches.

Episode Highlights

In this heartfelt conversation, Catherine introduces us to the PACE model of parenting (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy) and shares:

  • How traditional parenting methods often fail children with trauma or neurodivergence
  • Practical examples of using playfulness to help dysregulated children
  • The spiritual parallels between PACE parenting and God's relationship with us
  • How parents can find peace and self-acceptance even in difficult seasons

Catherine reminds us that "God is our therapeutic parent" who sits with us in empathy, accepts us exactly as we are, and invites us into relationship without demanding perfection.

πŸ“– Weekly Devotional: Finding God in the Chaos

"The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love."

- Psalm 103:8

Reflection: When our children are struggling and traditional methods aren't working, we often question ourselves as parents. We may even question God. Yet in those very moments of dysregulation and despair, God is present - not with judgment, but with the same playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy that Katherine describes.

The PACE model invites us to see parenting through a new lens - one that mirrors God's approach toward us. When we're overwhelmed and our "lid is flipped," God doesn't demand immediate compliance or perfection. Instead, He meets us where we are, helps us regulate our emotions, and walks with us through the process of growth.

As parents, we can extend this same grace to our children and to ourselves. We can trust that the God who adopted us as His children understands our struggles intimately and remains present even in our most challenging moments.

A Prayer for Mamas

Heavenly Father, When we feel overwhelmed by the challenges of parenting, remind us of Your presence. Help us to approach our children with the same playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy that You show us.

When our patience runs thin and our energy depletes, fill us with Your strength. Remind us that in our imperfection, there is grace, and in our mistakes, there are opportunities for repair and growth.

May we see our children through Your eyes - as beloved, worthy, and uniquely created. And may we remember that You hold us with the same tenderness we desire to show our children. Amen.

Add this simple tool to help you as you find peace.

Some days are just HARD. My favorite way to relax and regulate is to roll on some Adaptiv essential oil. If I'm lucky, I mix it with epsom salt and put it in a bath! Use it when you start to feel the fear creeping in. The smell provides amazing calming benefits.
